Alpine Boy deemed unfit for Maryland racing
The Maryland State Racing Commission ruled 12-year-old Alpine Bor is too blind to race at Fairgo near Cumberland, while finding no blame for the accident that killed jockey Benny Leggett. Vet reports cited vision loss but noted Alpine Boy can navigate with guidance, and past performances show mixed results despite blindness in one eye. Jockey John Tammaro testified the horse is rough and raised safety concerns after prior incidents. The commission also addressed track officials and noted scheduling issues in local softball and a Baltimore postal worker recruitment update.
