First Grinage Kindergarten Reunion Brings Past Voices Home

Former Esther Grinage Kindergarten students, teachers, and organizers met Saturday at Gambrill State Park tearoom for a reunion. The 1937 to 1973 kindergarten was the county’s first black program, born from parents’ push against segregation. Former student Darryl Hall recalled the community’s effort to start from scratch and succeed.

Be a Sole Survivor program aims to cut Maryland road deaths

Maryland State Police launch a Be a Sole Survivor campaign to reduce pedestrian and bicyclist deaths on state and interstate highways. Officers will cite violations and hand out safety information while emphasizing crosswalk use, daylight risks, and breakdown safety. Frederick County statistics show four local fatalities last year and 37 pedestrians and 29 bicyclists injured. Nationwide, 98 pedestrians were killed and 3439 injured. most fatalities occur at night, but Frederick County deaths were daytime.

Alderman William Lee Won't Seek Re election

Alderman William Lee Jr announced Monday he will not seek re election in this fall's city race. Publisher George Dredden notes Lee's eight years in office were gratifying and educational. Both Lee and Dredden indicate they will not run again and the story continues on Page A 7.

Cause of city fire remains under investigation in Maryland

Frederick city officials report a three alarm blaze at warehouse three on Wisner Street started around 1:20 a.m. and took over four hours to control. The fire destroyed Christmas decorations, trolley memorabilia, the old post office site and extensive city property. Fire officials note high power lines hindered efforts as crews worked through the night with more than 100 firefighters.

Cullen escapees recaptured near Blue Ridge Summit

Two Victor Cullen Academy inmates fled during a routine transfer Sunday and were later found near the Blue Ridge Summit town center about 300 yards from campus. A Maryland State Police helicopter aided the manhunt as staff tracked their movements across the border area.
