Two Americus Churches Bar Negroes At Service

In Americus Georgia two civil rights groups were blocked from entering First Baptist and First Methodist churches during a tense Sunday. Fire Chief H K Henderson warned demonstrators at the Baptist church that violence would be met with bloodshed while a line of white men stood at Methodist steps. A group of about six demonstrators tried to enter the Baptist church and knelt to pray outside the Methodist church after being denied entry. Mayor T Walker Griffin observed at Methodist as Willie Bolden of the SCLC reiterated a desire to worship. King’s planned visit to Americus was canceled so he could go to Philadelphia.
