Maryland units called to active duty amid mobilization doubt
Four Maryland Army Reserve units were activated today. The 25th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squad, the 483rd Chemical Smoke Generating Battalion, the 836th Engineer Utilities Detachment, and the 376th Engineer Utilities Detachment were mobilized with orders to report August 19. Maj. Gen. Milton A. Reckord, Maryland Adjutant General, voiced doubt about immediate National Guard mobilization, noting it would deprive the state of guardsmen and that the division’s federalization could affect Virginia as part of the 29th Infantry Division. The units were formed in Baltimore or by local agencies and sponsors, including the American Oil Company for the chemical battalion.
