Birthday of Francis Scott Key Noted Century and A Half Ago

Yesterday marked the 110th anniversary of Francis Scott Key born near Emmitsburg on August 1 1779. He died in Baltimore January 14 1843 and was buried in Frederick. Key educated at St Johns Annapolis began law in Baltimore later DC district attorney. Known for The Star Spangled Banner and a 1857 poetry collection. In 1874 James Lick of San Francisco donated 150000 for a Key monument in that city.

Last of Camp Jackson Reviewed by Generals at Frederick Junction

Rain delayed travel as General Brown and Col Saunders reviewed the Provisional Battalion at Camp Jackson near Frederick Junction. Major Brown praised officers and troops for discipline and order. After a joint dinner, parade and a 5.20 train return to Baltimore, the camp emptied and only tent outlines remained by Sunday. A separate circuit court decree voided the will of Susan A M Dinterman of Middletown Valley after a two year dispute.

City Health Officer Dr 3d. 8. Marnard reports July figures with 13 interments and 8 deaths. White 5, colored 3, under 5 years old 5, ages 5 to 20 unrecorded, 50 to 70 one case, over 70 one case. Causes include cancer of death inflammation of bowels, cholera infantum two, tuberculosis meningitis two, gastritis two. One scarlet fever case reported.
