Consumers pay more for checking accounts at big banks
PIRG says the average regular checking cost at large banks is about 218 dollars yearly compared with 190 dollars at smaller banks, widening minimum balance gaps and boosting fees. The survey covers 419 banks in 29 states and D C, noting 64 keep free checking and 41 offer free with direct deposit.
