Barnesville voters to cast ballots in old style civic rite
In Barnesville on May 6 voters will use a cigar box at Bob Lillard's garage to cast ballots in a tradition that mirrors 19th century practices. Elizabeth Tolbert, unopposed for mayor, oversees a social polling day with 50 to 65 registered voters, judges, and a town clerk. Absentee ballots and same-day registration keep turnout flexible while House bill 444 prompts debate over county registration and home rule. The Maryland Municipal League plans a response, while Barnesville maintains its century-old, self governed approach to democracy.
