Rickover Testifies In A Sub Probe
Vice Adm. Hyman G. Rickover discounted any possibility of an explosion aboard the sunken Thresher telling a Navy Court of Inquiry it is physically impossible for the nuclear plant to explode like a bomb. He described safety design to prevent radiation release and noted sea water provides cooling and safeguards. He cited samples showing no radioactivity at the Thresher site and explained his role in nuclear propulsion and crew selection.

Hackey and Gardner Re jailed after county escape

Grand Jury Called For Hiker Slaying
A special grand jury session will be called in the rifle slaying of a Baltimore integrationist. Floyd Simpson, 40, rural storekeeper, is held on a murder warrant for the killing of William L. Moore, 35, with the state waiving a preliminary hearing. Moore’s body was found on a road near Gadsden, Alabama.
