Rev James Doherty of Everest Pennsylvania endorses Paine's Celery Compound for neuralgia and blood disorders claiming strong personal benefit. He reports increased nerve strength and vitality with no drowsy aftereffects, saying the medicine keeps his system in good order.
Seven Boston Italians went to police asking protection after receiving letters claiming they must fund the New York barrel murder defense. The letters warn that the Mafia eye is on them and threaten death if money is not sent. dated April 25 from New York and signed with a Latin name. Inspectors were dispatched to Boston’s Italian quarter to investigate.
George A Baer president of Reading talks at the Interstate Commerce Commission hearing on coal pricing. He refuses to name independent suppliers or reveal contracts with Temple Iron and declines to answer a question as insolent. Baer says there is no pool among railroads and plans a price rise to five dollars a ton if market allows.
Edward Frank and William Wyeth, miners at Oak Hill colliery near Pottsville Pennsylvania, were killed by a coal fall. Vancouver dispatch reports Frank Alberta struck by a rockslide from Turtle mountain. Entire hillside collapsed, dammed Old Man's river, floods valley, and buried most buildings. At least 102 killed with many others trapped in mines or crushed in beds. Rescue and relief urged by Ottawa and MacLeod police. fear of further slides looms.
Postmaster General Henry C. Payne is described as the busiest and most worried member of President Roosevelt's cabinet. He confronts smuggling concerns in Porto Rico and the discovery of irregular practices within the general post office department, keeping him with full hands.
Washington dispatch reports Ambassador McCormick quotes Russia’s foreign minister as denying demands for treaty ports in Manchuria and pledging no exclusion of other powers. Separate Japanese telegram from Yokohama says Russia has evacuated Shing-King province, with Tokyo noting American moral support.
Three thousand people attended the first concert of the Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra with Nordica and De Reszke as soloists in Scranton. the orchestra of 70 played with fine acoustics as the tour proceeds to Reading and other cities. Nordica and De Reszke received repeated ovations and conductor Duss impressed with his graceful style.
King Edward of England visited the Vatican in Rome with only a few plainclothes policemen as escort. He wore a marshals uniform and met Pope Pius X, exchanging a French greeting before spending about 20 minutes together. The Pontiff wore white robes, and the pair later met his suite for a short ceremonial exchange.

Newport R I April 30 After formal placement in commission in the harbor Reliance yacht was taken out for a two hour trial spin. She endured the most severe test yet with winds and seas challenging the craft while observers praised her staunch performance. The Sunbeam tender often struggled to keep up in the wake of the yacht in heavy sea conditions near the Connecticut shore.
