In heavy rain and knee deep mud near Saline a Union force led by Rice's Tows brigade and Engleman's men held off a Confederate assault. Despite long odds and hunger, they repulsed the first Confederate push, crossed the river to threaten guns, and drove back the attack with infantry supports including the Second Kansas colored regiment, ending in a Confederate retreat.
