Northwest pilots strike halts most operations nationwide
About 1,500 Northwest Airline pilots began a strike at 12:01 a.m. grounding limited service between Minneapolis-St Paul and Chicago. No new talks were scheduled as union demands and long list of issues stalled negotiations. Five Japan bound flights were grounded affecting 1,800 passengers. Northwest refused to return to talks until the strike ended.

Inflation raises Social Security and federal aid benefits
The Social Security Administration announced a 6.5 percent benefits increase effective late June or early July due to inflation. Retirees ages 65 plus workers will see the max rise from 459.80 to 489.70 and the min from 114.30 to 121.80. Aged couple benefits increase from 407 to 433 monthly, while Supplemental Security Income payments rise to 189.40 for individuals and 284.10 for couples.
