Local Naval Flyer Dies In California Crash
Lieut. William T. Delaplaine IV of the U S Navy son of William T Delaplaine co publisher of The News and The Port died Tuesday night in the crash of a twin engined Navy plane on a hill near Oakland Calif Two other occupants were seriously injured The Navy announced the crash scraped the top of a 1500 foot hilltop He was one of three pilots aboard the big transport and had been promoted last December 18 He was 23 turning 24 next Sunday a native of Frederick and a 1939 graduate of McDonogh School He attended Washington and Lee University and the University of Missouri School of Journalism before entering service Continued on Page five

The Ipanonyios of James H Grove a Frederick businessman and chair of the Democratic State Central Committee was named to a six year term on the Maryland Board of Correction with commission arriving at the Circuit Court office. Dr Thomas Strother of Brunswick was named to Springfield State Hospital for a six year term beginning May 1 1939 likely to fill a vacancy. Commissions were also issued for eight county and city trial magistrates and justices of the peace three Board of Election Supervisors and 180 notaries public all effective May 1. City Attorney Edward J Smith to replace Manuel Weinberg as one of Fredericksburgs two trial magistrates. Mayor Lloyd Culler has not named a successor for the remainder of the term.
