Frederick Democrats choose Thursday May 4 as the city primaries date to select delegates to the city convention and form a new eight precinct committee. Each precinct will have five men and five women, creating an 80 member body with equal gender representation, and meetings continue at Democratic headquarters.
Construction of the gymnasium and swimming pool buildings for St. Joseph's College at Emmitsburg has begun after plans were long in place. The gymnasium will be three stories with a social hall and sleeping quarters, while the adjoining one story swimming pool measures 43 by 115 feet with a 20 by 60 pool. The project, costing about 200000, features modern appointments and is designed by architect and builder John T. Brambie of Baltimore.
Baltimore daylight saving goes into effect April 30 slowing the city train departures by one hour. Morning train to Baltimore moves from 6 to 5, 2 pm train moves from 2 to 1, and the Martinsburg line now leaves at 3 instead of 3 10 to connect at Washington Junction. Evening 7 pm train moves to 6 50 with No. 7 at Harper's Ferry and the Washington-bound No. 8 departs at 6 50 as well. The Bird of Paradise musical arrives in Frederick after venue changes, starring Ann Reader with a strong Pittsburgh Alvin Theatre pedigree.
Ten year old Guy Kline Jr of Hagerstown will sing at Evangeli cal Reformed church Sunday evening. The local weather forecast warns of frost tonight if clear skies persist and temperatures fall toward 36 to 40 degrees. Forecasters expect cool, cloudy conditions tomorrow with possible wind shifts from west to south and rising daytime temperatures, after a night that saw lows near 43 and a high yesterday around 66.
The Brunswick High School hosted its annual College Decision Day with Professor Roger X Day and Head College officials presenting to students the advantages of a college education. Dr Charles Wehrer represented Head College in Branewick. The report comes from Genoa on April 28. A curious line notes a six pound mackerel remark about a local city event.
Three miners Stanley Meilke Andrew Borniak and Frank Ridgakl died when a berth washroom exploded at the Patterson mine of the Kiskingat Company near Apollo Pennsylvania early today. One miner Frank Cogashi was badly injured and may not recover. Seven asleep in a bunkhouse, the blast woke them and the fuse exploded in Meilke s arms. The tragedy leaves fourteen children fatherless. The mine employed 76 men before a nonunion strike began on April 1.
Paris reports the death of Paul Eugene Louis Deschanel former tenth President of France who began a seven year term in 1920 after a sweeping January election. Deschanel a noted statesman author and famed orator lived from 1857 in Brussels where his father was exiled and later returned to France. He faced resignation after political pressures but his legacy included the era beyond Clemenceau.
Seven women were fined for disorderly conduct at Mine No 2 of the Colfere Hill Coal and Coke Co, ten miles from Uniontown, during a demonstration as miners prepared to enter. Police arrested seven from a large crowd. some women were described as tense due to husbands not being drafted. Three women fined previously at another mine faced $129 plus costs.
