Hero of Altoona Dies in Winchester at 70
General John M Corse once called the hero of Altoona died today in Winchester. Born in Pittsburg April 27, 1850 he entered West Point then pursued law in Burlington Indiana. A Civil War veteran he rose to brigadier general and led the Fourth division of the Fifteenth Army Corps. His defense at Altoona Pass inspired the hymn Hold the Fort. He was twice married, his second wife being Pierce’s niece.
