Bootsy Collins Early Life and Rise to Fame
Bootsy Collins and his Rubber Band rose from Cincinnati roots to stardom on the 1970s funk scene. From wrestling with asthma as a child to forming a musical bond with his brother Phelps, Collins developed a bold stage persona and star glasses. He joined James Brown’s band in 1969, then formed Bootsy’s Rubber Band with a unique onstage look and flashy fashion. In 1974 George Clinton recruited them for Funkadelic, leading to the breakout 1976 album Stretchin Out in Bootsy’s Rubber Band.
