Tragic North Branch Tower Operator Suicide
Claude E Watkins aged 24, a Baltimore and Ohio tower operator, shot himself near the North Branch tower yesterday after marrying Lillian Lewy of Ithaca New York last Thursday. He left a note of no premeditation. his bride witnessed the event as a crowd gathered, with his death deemed self-inflicted. Watkins, son of a Montgomery County farmer, had been described as a capable operator. The bridal marriage drew a large crowd and an unusual, ad hoc ceremony occurred when Rev. Raymond, delayed by a missing Baptist clergyman, arranged the nuptials with another preacher. The couple reportedly met via an advertisement. The groom’s death followed a brief courtship with another Cumberland–area woman and the North Branch debutante scene. The groom’s father and three sisters survive him. his widow is 23. The occasion was marked by local attention, with a reception for infants at the Reformed Sunday school last night featuring games and ice cream.
