Baker pushes for compromise on defense spending in 1984

Senate leader Howard Baker seeks a middle ground between Reagan and the GOP on next year’s military budget. He favors a roughly 7.5 percent defense spending rise, midway between Reagan’s 10 percent after inflation and a 5 percent cap. The 444.9 billion dollar fiscal 1984 ceiling includes extra non defense domestic spending and a 30.2 billion tax rise, with a 5 percent cap on defense increases. A high stakes budget vote looms as House moves to hold Rita Lavelle in contempt over EPA mismanagement questions.
