Double Tragedy In Oil City Ends In Murder Suicide
In Oil City Pennsylvania on April 25 Thaddeus S Ross a 35 year old post office clerk was shot to death by his former sweetheart Isabelle Stroup 28 who then killed herself. Ross had been set to marry Miss Drusilla Sampson. The crime occurred in the office of Dr George W Magee after Stroup called Ross from his home during lunch. The pair were prominent locals. Stroup’s motive remains uncertain. Ross a Spanish American War veteran was 35. Stroup lived in Bradford and had traveled to Oil City for the act.

A 70 mile per hour gale toppled a chimney at the T. C. Wheaton Company power house in Millville New Jersey killing three women Sylvia Gallagher Lena Doughty and Lydia Thurston. Rescue efforts followed as workers and relatives, including George Doughty whose daughter was trapped, searched the wreckage. Thurston survived after being pulled from the timber and bricks but died about an hour later while Gallagher died instantly. Doughty’s niece Lydia Thurston remained among the injured and dying at the scene.

25 Years for Murder Seaman Found Guilty on Tennessee
Seaman Maurice Burke of the cruiser Tennessee was sentenced by a court martial to 25 years imprisonment with 29 years hard labor for murdering chief master-at-arms James Douglass and attempting to kill master-at-arms William McCool aboard the Tennessee at League Island Philadelphia.
