Ervin's energy dazzled colleagues in final years
In Morganton North Carolina former Senator Sam J Ervin Jr died at 88 from respiratory failure. The longtime Democrat amazed peers with nonstop legal research and letters to politicians while writing a third book The Autobiography of Sam Ervin. He remained active at his law office, driving his old blue Oldsmobile daily and engaging in constitutional debates with lawmakers.
