Amputees Make Their Own Limbs at Thai Refugee Camp

Cambodians in Khao-I-Dang refugee camp adapt to war injuries by crafting and fitting their own artificial limbs as a unique self-help work program. The steady border situation and ongoing three-year Cambodian guerrilla war shape the context, with land mines affecting both combatants and civilians near the camp. Sukhom, an 11-year-old, is among those involved.

Tradition rules with East German organ makers

In Frankfurt an der Oder the Spallek family preserves Wilhelm Sauer organ making, now nationalized. Gerhard Spallek runs the 40-worker plant, maintaining links to the International Society of Organ Builders while most output serves East Germany and a few other states. The firm, founded 1857, keeps church organs as state policy allows. The 1983 Luther anniversary in Wittenberg drives a major current project.
