Briefer stays could cut care costs in ICU for chest pains

Massachusetts General Hospital researchers report nearly half of patients admitted to intensive care for chest pains can be discharged within one day after normal tests. Savings from shorter ICU stays could average 26 percent of care costs, reducing ICU bed use by about 9 percent. The study, in the New England Journal of Medicine, analyzed 2,003 ICU admissions over two years.
