Mount Airy Eyes Mayoral Race After Years Without One
In Mount Airy, voters will choose a mayor and three council members on May 5. Incumbent Lewis C Dixon faces challenger Robert H Woodward for the mayor's seat. Council incumbents Harold M Molesworth and Henry P Rinkles seek re election alongside four challengers Frank Staratt Holmes Fred Beuchert I and Charles F Beck. Dixon, 58, a former NC native and ex defense worker, has served on the council and led town efforts to revitalize downtown and update growth plans. Woodward, 34, of the Mount Airy Civic Association, accuses Dixon of biased governance and seeks a more open, community responsive government. Molesworth and Runkles offer limited campaign presence, while Holmes, Beuchert, and Beck run as new challengers with varied local business and public service backgrounds.
