Foreign Aid Bill Is Cut in House Action
Washington reports show the House Foreign Affairs Committee cut 339 million dollars from the rock bottom foreign aid program amid quick votes. Acting Chairman Morgan said the cuts could be reconsidered but likely permanent for the committee. The big bill heads for the House floor next week with possible efforts to restore funds by Administration forces. The President seeks 3.942 billion for mutual security into the new fiscal year. Eisenhower asked 3.604 billion for the current year with a 661 million carryover, final approval was 2.768 billion plus carryover. The committee rejected splitting the bill into separate military and economic aid measures by 17 to 7. An authorization sets the ceiling for fiscal 1959 until an appropriations bill funds the program.
