Tarahumara Runners Show Limited Cardiac Potential

Dr. Dale Groom reported at the 50th annual American College of Physicians meeting that Tarahumara runners maintain endurance without heart enlargement. Eight runners aged 18 to 45 completed a 25.6 mile rugged race at about 6 mph, losing weight but with normal electrocardiograms, suggesting conditioning allows greater cardiac reserve. The study, aided by Dr. John Steelquist and Rev. Jose A. Linguna, notes Indians start training in childhood for endurance running.
