Welfare Fund Shrinks Under John L Lewis Plan
The United Mine Workers welfare fund, funded by per ton dues above ten cents, expanded to 40 cents with miners contributing nothing. It grew to over 100 million, funded pensions and hospital costs, and invested in a Washington bank and real estate. Postwar strikes and industry shifts reduced receipts to under 10 million monthly. 1953 saw 12 million expended monthly. A scaling down or self help via member contributions is suggested.
