Control thistles in Maryland this spring period
Extension weed specialist Dr. Ronald L Ritter urges control of Canada and musk thistles from mid April to late May using mowing, continuous cultivation, and timely herbicide applications. He notes alfalfa as a good companion crop and warns Canada thistle may require two years of treatment, with best herbicide timing before power stalk formation.

Nursery inspector speaks to Frederick students on pests

He highlighted the most common insects on Maryland nursery stock, taught identification and control measures, and outlined division duties including chinch bug control, the gypsy moth program, and nursery inspections.

ACP Aides Farmers and Conservation Programs in Maryland
The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee reports that 20 036 acres in Maryland received conservation treatments under the ACP last year with 952 780 dollars in ASCS cost share aiding 45 producers. Practices include planting trees water impoundments terraces sediment structures sod waterways and permanent cover. About 89 farms enrolled in 1960 and five entered long term agreements for 3 to 10 years. The 1981 ACP signup is ongoing with county ASCS offices available for applications.
