Explorer Col Abert’s belongings donated to US defense mapping center
Descendants of Col John J. Abert present his field desk shaving kit and toiletry case, plus five uniform buttons and portraits, to the Defense Mapping Agency. Army officials note the shared professional heritage with Abert, a 19th century explorer and topographer. The items will be shown at Armed Forces Day open house in Bethesda, May 16. Rabbit hair Angora sweaters are noted as long soft fur from Angora rabbits, likely bred in Turkey.
