Move To Cut Scope Of Trade Bill Defeated In Senate Finance

In Washington on April 19 a Republican bid to narrow Eisenhower’s foreign trade bill failed 8 to 7 in the Senate Finance Committee aided by a long distance call. The measure sought a two year extension and a 10 percent tariff cut limit, while the bill would extend reciprocity powers for three years and permit tariff cuts up to 15 percent in exchange for concessions. Senator Millikin urged the stricter terms, but the panel rejected them.

Bitter House fight over amendment delays tariff plan

The committee deadlocked 7-7 on an amendment to the Millikinistration program with five Democrats and one Republican in support. A telephone vote by Sen Long shifted the result against the amendment, allowing a three year extension and a 15 percent tariff cut range to pass on a later vote. Chairman Byrd warned the decision could be changed before the committee completes its work on the bill.
