Airborne Evacuation Resumes From Srebrenica

UN helicopters ferried dozens to safety from Srebrenica as a truce between Serb besiegers and Muslim defenders held and relief trucks moved toward the enclave. Doctors and Red Cross staff entered the area while talks on demilitarization and possible land corridors continued under UN auspices.

Apparent self inflicted gunshot at Fort Detrick scene

An unidentified man in his 50s suffered an apparent suicide attempt after a gunshot wound to the head. He was found in front of the USAMRIID building at Fort Detrick and flown by state police helicopter to Suburban Hospital, Bethesda. The provost marshal's office investigates, a weapon found beside him, per Fort Detrick spokesman Norm Covert.

Walk America Fundraiser Draws 600+ In Frederick

More than 600 participated in the March of Dimes Walk America fundraiser in Frederick Md, with two routes 12.5 miles and 3 miles. Victoria Leiman reported a strong turnout and preliminary estimates over 45000 raised as Fort Detrick soldiers led the finish.

Opposition to hiker biker trail in Brownsville area grows

More than 100 residents spoke against converting a 17.9 mile abandoned rail corridor between Weverton and Roxbury into a trail bought by the DNR in 1991 for 950000. They pressed for public discussion, noting lack of notice to officials and property owners about the plan and potential costs estimated at about 1 million to build the trail.

Dr William H Thomas Dies Noted Frederick Dentist and Civic Leader

Dr William H Thomas Jr aged 75 died Sunday April 18 a lifelong Frederick County resident. A 1943 Temple University DDS graduate he served as Commander in the Navy Dental Corps in World War II and later in the Navy Reserve. He practiced at Church and Market streets for 41 years retiring 1987 and held leadership posts on the Maryland Board of Dental Examiners and the Frederick County Dental Society receiving the 1969 Thomas Lnader Award for service. He attended Gettysburg College and Penn State and was active in Phi Lambda Chi Alpha and Blue Key. Continued on Page A-1.

Garden enthusiast fights roadside mowing in Frederick County

Christine Maccabee of Eyler's Valley Flint Road leads a campaign against the county’s slash and burn mowing. She formed the Friends of Nature Garden Club and obtained a two year pilot moratorium to let wildflowers thrive. Road crews will mow only once in late fall on select roads, with club members maintaining visibility and safety.

Tank and gas used on cult leader's compound at Waco

Federal agents used an armored vehicle to punch holes in the Branch Davidian compound in Waco Texas and tear gas inside the buildings housing David Koresh and 95 followers after 51 days of siege Six federal agents died earlier in the gun battle on Feb 28 and cult leaders claim six members were killed The FBI said generic tear gas was sprayed to urge surrender and a clear exit path was created while signaling the end of the standoff

C&O Canal Towpath Closed After Heavy Flooding

Flooding from heavy rain caused the C&O Canal towpath to close from Cumberland to the Frederick Montgomery line. Rangers report water over the towpath in several spots Saturday night and cars trapped near boat ramps. The Potomac River crested at 22 feet in Point of Rocks and the Monocacy River overflowed its banks, submerging Buckeystown Park play equipment and picnic tables as crews assess damage.
