Frederick area stock trading shows national rally spillover

Stock trading in Frederick area has grown over the past days with local brokers split on whether the rise mirrors a national market surge or normal activity. Nationally, record highs were reached as NYSE volume climbed to 1.8 billion on Saturday and 1.4 billion on Friday, with 63 million shares traded on Saturday. Ground breaking held for 85 million New Market Middle School

Ground was officially broken Wednesday for the 85 million New Market Middle School on land next to the elementary school. Frederick County Superintendent Dr Gordon M Anderson Jackson and school officials joined students and parents as the first shovels moved soil. The 900 pupil capacity facility is set to open in 1979.

County Treasurer to retire after 38 years in Frederick County

Mrs. Charlotte Yarroll Kerrigan will retire on November 30, 1978, ending 38 years in Frederick County government. Beginning Sept. 1, 1939, she joined as deputy clerk to County Treasurer Falk and later completed his term. She won election in 1962 and served unopposed in 1966 and 1974, noting the county’s move from hand to computer driven tax processing and the region’s growth.

Stitely enters county commissioner race on Independent ticket

Richard E. Stitely a 35 year old plumber with R W Warner becomes the sixth candidate for county commissioner and the first on an Independent ticket. He plans to collect 1200 petition names by July to appear on the November ballot while canvassing Frederick City. Stitely will attend county meetings for information and will join five others including Republicans and Democrats in the race for the Board of County Commissioners.

Senators Vote For Panama Canal Treaties

Economic production shows first drop in three years

The Commerce Department reports the US economy shrank 0.6 percent annualized in Q1 1978, the first decline in three years, dragged by severe winter weather and a coal strike. It notes weaker business sales and consumer spending as key factors, with unemployment around 6.2 percent and inflation at 7 percent.

Burall Seeks Democratic Nomination For County Commissioner

Jesse I. Burall Sr., a Monrovia dairy farmer and longtime civic and farm group member, announced on Wednesday his bid for the Democratic nomination for county commissioner. The 50 year old is the sixth Democrat to enter the race for the five nominating slots in the September primary. Burall previously ran in 1974 for the House of Delegates in District 4 A and was defeated by Charles E. Smith of Brunswick. He remains active in civic and agricultural groups.
