Castro charges US role in Cuban counterrevolution plot
Fidel Castro accused U S authorities at Guantanamo Naval Base of aiding a counterrevolutionary plot in eastern Cuba. He alleged U S planes seek contact with Manuel Beaton and said the goal is resistance on the east coast. The State Department denied the claim and said planes were conducting routine searches. Castro expressed willingness to talk and avoided naming a meeting with Eisenhower or Herter. Beaton, a rebel who escaped Havana, had previously operated in the same mountains Castro used against Batista.
