Budget-Cutting Drive Falls Flat On Face
The 1954 House budget-cutting drive shows modest reductions from the requested 12.1 billion dollars for nine large federal agencies and many bureaus. Cuts total about 600 million, around five percent, far below last year’s 20 percent trimming. The Eisenhower budget aims for a tight year with 5.6 billion in new appropriations. Local payrolls rose, totaling 234 billion dollars in 1953 with local governments employing most, followed by federal and state payrolls.
