Education advocates push for county tax hike to fund schools

About 350 people attended the hearing at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School as advocates urged Frederick County Commissioners to approve a 20 cent tax increase to cover the Frederick County Board of Education budget. The board seeks 112 million of its 193 million budget from the county, with state and federal funds filling the rest. Local officials propose 106 million. One speaker noted a home valued at 100 000 would pay 62 more dollars annually. Only Otto Gross opposed, arguing budgets threaten programs without guaranteed outcomes.
