Perdue Faces IRS Over $18,000 Gift Tax Fight
Maryland poultry magnate Frank Perdue clashes with the IRS over back taxes tied to a 1984 gift to the Smithsonian. The IRS contends the gold ingot chain and coin from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha were valued at $74,000, forcing an $18,000 additional tax bill. Perdue disputes the assessment and is appealing in U S Tax Court based on a much higher claimed value of $375,000 for the artifacts.
