Amtrak struggle marks long decline in U S passenger rail
Baltimore based report details Amtrak’s financial losses and aging equipment as critics blame underfunding and private track ownership. It notes ultra slow progress since 1971, with 3.2 billion in subsidies but continuing annual losses around 550 million, while some service like Metroliner and San Diego-Los Angeles show promise.

Sea adventure makes big splash
Hank Searls and his wife Berna Anne wrote the novel Overboard during a three year voyage aboard a 40 foot ketch in the South Pacific. The book is now in paperback and will be an NBC movie next fall. The couple endured gales off New Zealand and near-shipwreck conditions while navigating by sun and stars. Their voyage strengthened their marriage and inspired the story about long sea journeys testing a couple. They sold the ketch in New Zealand and returned to the United States, now living in Newport Beach and owning a larger boat, the Berna Ann II.
