AZT markedly improves first year survival in AIDS patients
Burroughs Wellcome reports AZT nearly doubles AIDS patients' odds of surviving the first year. In a study of 281 patients across 12 centers, about 89 percent on AZT for one year survived, versus 35-55 percent without the drug. Effects grow with continued use, though long term survival remains unknown.

New technique could spare most mastectomies, study shows
London based researchers report a breast conserving method combining lumpectomy with targeted radiation, using radioactive iridium wires to destroy remaining cancer cells while the breast is preserved. In trials at Guy's Hospital and in Belgium and the Netherlands, about half of participants kept their breasts with similar outcomes to mastectomy, suggesting conservation therapy as first line for many patients.
