Jarvik Heart Recipient Bled Through Night in Louisville
Jack C. Burcham, 62, the fifth and oldest recipient of a Jarvik-7 heart, bled overnight and needed about 21 pints of blood, yet doctors said the condition is not life threatening. He remains in critical condition at Humana Hospital Audubon as Dr. William DeVries notes the pump is a tight fit and plans for a possible second operation if blood pools in tissue. Medical officials cited good kidney function and ongoing anti-coagulant therapy, while other Humana implant patients also faced bleeding issues.
