FCC Dedication Open House May 2 at Frederick Community College

The Frederick Community College Board of Trustees will dedicate the new Opossumtown Pike Campus on Sunday May 2 at 2 p.m. The event features Senator Charles McC Mathias as principal speaker and includes remarks by community college staff students trustees and officials. The 324th Army Band will provide music and an open house will follow for the public to tour the facilities.

Fast Air Mail Service Effective April 22

Postmaster John DC Young announced Frederick will participate in a rapid air mail plan, the first National Service Goal of the U S Postal Service. The program, effective April 22, aims for next day delivery to most towns within 600 miles and two days to major U S cities, with air mail boxes at Frederick Shopping Center and 201 E Patrick St.

Blood stamp soothes taxpayer at post office rush

A local taxpayer hurried to beat the income tax deadline and bought two 6 cent stamps bearing the new Blood Program. The stamps urged blood donation and featured the Red Cross emblem. The man joked there was none left, citing the slogan with a smile as he mailed his envelopes to Uncle Sam and the state comptroller.

Youth's motorcycle accident leaves leg broken near Frederick

John William Andrews aged 17 of RFD 2 Frederick was pushing a motorcycle along Araby Road when he slipped into a roadside ditch. The bike toppled and broke his leg, he was admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital. About 150 dollars damage was done to the cycle owned by Louis Keith Smith of RFD 2 Frederick. The incident happened at 6 25 p.m. Wednesday. In a separate county crash Laurel Lee Kinman 30 of Thurmont was admitted with possible head injuries after her car crossed from the southbound lane of Catoctin Hollow Road into the northbound lane and struck a tree. Mrs Kinman initially refused treatment but later complained of head pains and was taken to the hospital by Thurmont ambulance. The accident occurred at 3 20 p.m. Wednesday.

Cycle Gang Damages Green Valley School

Vandals on mini-bikes damaged seven doors and chipped bricks at the Green Valley School construction site last weekend. Tracks filled the building as doors were rammed from the inside, mastic smeared on floors and walls, with no theft reported. Authorities say the $1.3 million project, targeted by the incident, remains under investigation by State Police. the site lies at Md. 75 and Ma. 80 and is not guarded at night.

Cool Frederick Weather To Stay Chilly This Weekend

Frederick area sees sunny skies but cooler temperatures continue through the weekend. Wednesday peaked at 49 degrees after 82 the previous day. Overnight lows dipped to 31 degrees, first below freezing this month, with more 30s forecast tonight.

South Viets Launch Counter Offensive in Central Highlands

Thousands of South Vietnamese troops began a counter offensive against North Vietnamese forces in the central highlands. North Vietnamese and Viet Cong attacks continued near Fire Base 6, Tan Canh, and Fire Base Lonely as U.S. advisers faced deaths and missing personnel. Government reports tallied high casualties for both sides, with substantial enemy losses and ongoing heavy bombardments in eastern Cambodia. Six U.S. helicopters delivered supplies to Fire Base 6 amid continued fighting nearby.

Marijuana Charged To Two In Frederick County

Two Silver Spring residents, Russell Margulies aged 19 and an unnamed 15 year old, were charged with possession of marijuana after State Police stopped a disabled motorist on U S 40 near Frederick at 12 10 a m. Bond set at 500 for Margulies with a hearing slated April 20 in Trial Magistrate's Court.
