Maryland Use Tax Urged Despite Court Ruling
Maryland Comptroller Tawes urged merchants in neighboring states to collect the 2 percent use tax, arguing for a new Supreme Court hearing and noting the court decision exempted some out of state buyers but not all. The move aligns with Maryland's 2 percent use tax beside the 16 percent sales tax to curb cross border purchases. In Washington, the Agriculture Department won House approval for more funds than requested, prompting a Republican critic to accuse Benson of bypassing the Appropriations Committee.
