Standing Army Of 1,500,000 Needed By U. S.
Gen Omar N Bradley testified that if Universal Military Training is shelved the United States should raise a standing army of 1.5 million men costing billions, capable of sustaining a war burden for one year. He noted Russia could field 300 divisions in 60 days and satellite states could add about 95 more, with the U.S. having 90 ground divisions at war’s end. He supported a plug-in army plan and urged early expansion to 25 divisions, about 1.5 million men, while warning against overexpansion of the Air Force.
