Congressional cost cuts hurt nation’s poor and elderly
A GAO study finds six years of congressional cost-cutting raised out of pocket health expenses for poor Medicaid and elderly Medicare participants. Medicare costs rose about 162 dollars per enrollee from 1980 to 1985, with Part A up 49 percent and Part B up 31 percent after inflation. Rural and state variations limit Medicaid data, though 26 states increased cost sharing under TEFRA 1982. Rep. Edward Roybal urges action to curb further out of pocket rises while noting Medicaid serves only half the poor. Fire and ambulance calls summarized from last 24 hours with multiple locations in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
