A frost scare in local orchards subsides with 33 at the airport and 31 in Unionville, while a second frost risk looms tonight if temperatures dip below freezing. Forecasters expect 26 to 32 degrees with scattered frost then a warmer Wednesday and Thursday. Some damage to peaches already reported. April rainfall to 2.08 inches, still below normal.
M Robert Ritchie Jr a Frederick business man bought part of the Avenel Farm dispersal herd at Bethesda. He acquired 16 Shorthorn cows four with calves two heifers and a 5300 Scotch descent bull totaling about 20500. The cattle join Holly Hills Farms near Ijamsville road.
New York AP CBS reports France informed that John Foster Dulles will not attend the April 28 Western Foreign Ministers meeting in Paris. Christian Herter will represent the United States as acting secretary of state.
Willard Dawston Fitzwater George Henry Youngerman and Neal Monroe Thurston all of Boyds were arrested by State Police at Route 40 75 early this morning for destruction of property and other charges after their attempt to rob a phone booth. A motorist alerted troopers who found the top of the phone box pried off and the 1949 Ford Thurston parked nearby. Fitzwater and Thurston had prior similar incidents.
Three AP analysts and reporters will join a panel at the annual AP meeting in New York. Harold K Milks Joan Hightower and William L Ryan will participate with Kenneth MacDonald moderating. Treasury Secretary Robert B Anderson will be principal speaker at the Waldorf Astoria event. Six AP board directors will be elected in the morning session.
Washington senators say Secretary of State John Foster Dulles may resign if cancer treatment fails and a successor is needed. Dulles, back from Florida, remains in hospital as President Eisenhower weighs his future and Christian Herter acts as secretary.
Four bids were opened by The Burgess and Woodsboro commissioners for a 200 foot well to serve as an auxiliary water supply. Kohl Bros. of Harrisburg led at 2480 dollars though a bid met with questions over specifications. The others ranged from 3761 to 4756 dollars and were referred to engineers Whitman Reynardt for recommendation. The project includes yield testing and possible depth adjustments. The site is on municipal land and supports emergency needs.
Capt Lawrence W. Shinnick Jr of Hagerstown son of Mrs Bessie Shinnick trains with Air Force crews in a cone catching project using specialized nets and instruments. A WWII veteran captured July 1944 remained a prisoner until freed April 1945. He now lives with his wife and four children.
President Eisenhower led the dedication of a 100 foot Taft memorial tower at Capitol Hill honoring the late Sen. Robert A. Taft. Former President Hoover and other officials joined in praising Taft as a liberal defender of individual rights and a symbol of conservatism in national economic matters. Vice President Nixon and Speaker Rayburn accepted the gift for Congress.
The 1959 farm census, to begin in October in areas with early harvests and November elsewhere, will tally farms, crops, livestock and labor. About 12,700 farms in Frederick County were recorded in 1954. Enumerators will undergo training and work under strict confidentiality to provide data for five-year management planning and national statistics. The Enoch Royal Arch Chapter of Masons held a Grand Visitation Monday evening led by Bird H. Dolby Grand High Priest. About 90 attended the dinner at the Masonic Temple with Amos H. Elliott High Priest officiating. Members came from Cumberland Wagerstown Washington Baltimore and Annapolis.
Rural Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Campbellsville Kentucky earns 8500 dollars from a lease and receives one eighth of an oil well producing 3606 barrels daily. Police report one arrest overnight as James Edward Poole of Pine Avenue charged with operating while intoxicated and reckless driving by Lieut Ralph Potts on East Fifth Street at 1:10 am. He is held on a $1000 bond awaiting hearing.

A Scottsdale justice of the peace indefinitely postponed the setting of a trial date for Elliott Roosevelt 48 son of the late President Franklin D Roosevelt. He was arrested April 4 when found asleep at the wheel of a parked car in Scottsdale.
Chief Judge Patrick M Schnauffer today upheld a 28 verdict for Georg Albert Harrison in a Maryland area auto collision suit arising from a March 27, 1958 accident two miles north of Mt Airy. The defense won a directed verdict for Stem Motor Lines. Harrison claimed Dorsey acted as Stem’s agent. the court found no agency proved, awarding only car damage. Fire alarm report followed about 12 45 pm at Roger Lenhart place near White Rock development Yellow Springs.
Two county youths, Albert W. Schultz Jr. and Samuel L. Boyter, were found not guilty of larceny in a Washington Post paper theft case in Magistrate Shoemaker's court. They admitted taking bundles they believed were garbage to sell as junk the next day. Scholz was later convicted of reckless driving for a road accident while transporting papers, fined $15 plus costs.
In Bonn an AP report says two Soviet fighters harassed a Boeing Stratocruiser family transport returning from Berlin. The embassy cited dangerous maneuvers as the aircraft passed at about 12 000 feet. US and Soviet officers at Berlin’s air safety center exchanged protests. The United States rejected Soviet limits on the corridor and will fly as high as needed. A formal note was delivered to Moscow.
