Oil imports cited as ruinous to coal industry by insiders
A Washington news conference heard coal operators led by Dr. Charles J. Potter press for limits on oil imports saying the flow is forcing mine closures and job losses. They predicted 50 000 miners and 50 000 rail workers could be displaced yearly unless imports are cut to five percent of domestic demand. They urged $250 million yearly relief and backed a tariff proposal to curb imports.
