Final Week of Training Opened for Wilkes-Barre Barons

The Wilkes-Barre Barons begin their final spring training week at McCurdy Field in Frederick before departing next Thursday for exhibition games with Hazleton ahead of the April 27 season start. Hibie Fitzgerald led a five hour practice, featuring a four-to-three scrimmage between Yannigans and Regulars. George Polcha impressed with a triple and a perfect to second, while Paul Kardow dazzled with a fastball after arriving from Buffalo. The Barons have secured Kardow and Zubich as a top-flight battery with Steve ONeill. Dick Shoff from York, still owned by the Barons, appeared and plans to join Springfield soon. McNally returns today and is expected to loosen pitching once warm weather holds. Frederick Hustlers also worked out at McCurdy Field ahead of Sunday’s exhibition with Wilkes-Barre.

Only Ox Fiore Brush Company and Union Manufacturing would field teams while Frederick Tailoring favored speedball. Key Post American Legion declined sponsorship as other organizations showed scant support. No further effort will occur unless interest revives next year. Frederick County high schools had already dropped the sport from curricula due to low interest, leaving only the Frederick Hustlers as the local contact for baseball this year.
