29 Killed as Powder Explodes on Missouri During Target Practice
Pensacola, April 14. A blast at the Missouri during target practice killed 29 sailors and injured five, with two later dying. The explosion followed a powder charge in a 12 inch left hand gun and a later blaze in the handling room where 1600 pounds of powder ignited. Captain William S. Cowles directed flood and rescue efforts, himself carrying a dying crewman and leading recovery amid extreme heat. Names of the fallen include Lieutenant W. C. Davidson and Ensign E. B. A. Weichert among others. survivors were attended by crews from the Missouri, Texas, and Brooklyn.
