Pope preaches Palm Sunday to nearly a million in Buenos Aires
Pope John Paul II celebrated Palm Sunday Mass from a platform on Ninth of July Avenue in Buenos Aires guiding a throng nearing one million. He moved via popemobile to the altar as confetti rained and youths from around the world joined a three hour festival of song and dance. Police reported a nearby bomb damaged a Columbus statue but caused no injuries. The pope urged youths to build a civilization of love and urged an end to oppression, while anti pope graffiti and a harsh dictatorship past shadowed the visit.

Soviet Jews find reforms fail to ease exit hopes
Moscow reports show Gorbachev reforms do little to help Jews leave. Vladimir Slepak and others cite years of obstacles despite new rules aimed at speeding emigration. Begun and family remain in Moscow after a government pardon and recent protests urge permission for family members to depart.
