Local draft boards received May preinduction examination calls. Board One reports around 200 men sent to Baltimore for physicals this month. Calls aim to group under 26 deferment holders together before regular 1-A inductions. State estimates not more than 600 younger men statewide may qualify for new deferments.

London April 13 Britain and the United States toughened their policy toward neutrals by tightening the Irish blockade with reduced steamship service protesting Turkish chrome shipments to Germany and condemning the Spanish seizure of Allied oil stocks in Spanish Morocco. The Ministry of War Transport said steamer service from Britain to Ireland would be cut after April 24. Similar diplomatic notes were expected on Spanish and Portuguese wolfram and pall bearings to Germany while Hull warned neutrals their dealings with the enemy would not be tolerated.
Allied reports from Naples on April 13 describe German forces in the Garigliano sector near Cassino growing more aggressive as they regroup and mine the Garigliano river.
