Defense opens in East wrongful death suit over thyroid disorder
In Baltimore the federal government began its defense in a 3.5 million wrongful death suit brought by Priscilla East. The case centers on a videotaped May 1980 interview with Sen. John East and claims Navy doctors failed to diagnose a thyroid disorder, leading to depression and his 1986 death by carbon monoxide. The government argues East’s hypothyroidism was cured months earlier with synthetic drugs and that late diagnosis did not cause permanent damage or his death. The trial also included a deposition from former adviser Carter Wrenn noting East’s intellectual impairment before hospital release.
