Pension reform fight heads to federal court
Maryland Attorney General Stephen H Sachs predicted the new pension reform law will be declared constitutional by a federal court. Three unions representing state employees and teachers filed suit in Baltimore after Gov. Hughes signed the measure, arguing it impairs contracts and reduces benefits. The case, assigned to Judge James R. Miller Jr., opens with requests for summary judgment ahead of a trial set for September.

Merit board accuses Mont Co of abusing retirement system
The Merit System Protection Board charged Montgomery County with about 2.9 million dollars in improper and sometimes illegal overpayments of retirement benefits under County Executive Charles W. Gilchrist. The 27 page report urged immediate review of the retirement system and possible corrective action, noting extensive questionable retirements and likely deliberate manipulation. The board called for an oversight body to approve future retirements and potential deductions or special payments to cover overpayments.
