The Frederick County States Attorney predicts a rise in violent crime in 1972, citing more frequent, severe assaults and a diminishing likelihood of swift punishment. State police arrested 29 year old truck driver George J. Smith of Callahan Florida after two 16 year old hitchhikers and an 18 year old companion were picked up near Emmitsburg. Smith faces two counts of rape and assault with intent to commit murder. The victims were from Florida and North Carolina. One girl was stabbed in the chest and treated at Gettysburg’s Annie M Warner Hospital in satisfactory condition. The male companion survived smoke inhalation after a fire was started in the trailer.
A meeting of the Historic District Commission is planned for Thursday at 4 p.m. in City Hall. The panel will review permit applications from the Chamber of Commerce Orbital Properties Thomas Corea Guy Nusz and Mt Olivet Cemetery Association plus a preliminary review of alterations to Farmers and Mechanics National Bank. Public welcome.
State and county officials signaled near approval for a Cunningham Falls State Park landfill. If federal approval comes, a permit could be issued in six weeks, with hearings and plans to reuse the 57 acre site along U S 15 after filling pits. мест
An 82 year old Frederick man was stabbed in the back after a quarrel with his alleged lover at 104 S Market St. Petty, treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital for a half inch shoulder wound, named Betty Louise Buck as the suspect. Crum found the knife and jailed Buck after arresting her at the sister’s home. A District Court hearing is set for May 5 at 9 a.m.
U S military analysts say the next few days may tilt toward South Vietnamese forces in Quang Tri province near the DMZ. Despite gains for Saigon in Kompong Track Cambodia and Dong Ha, conditions in An Loc remain grim as North Vietnamese pressure eases in some areas and weather curtails bombing.
The 1972 Maryland General Assembly session closed with a busy finish as the Frederick delegation touted a strong score of 14 bills introduced and all but one approved in committee. About 100 American soldiers from one of the last two combat infantry brigades in Vietnam balked at manning a forward defense position near Phu Bai due to danger. Forty five relented after being told absence could endanger another U S unit. 45 remained. The Phu Bai area is near Hue as part of a 600 man task force defending installations against the North Vietnamese offensive.
Gov Marvin Mandel signed a bill raising Maryland gasoline tax by two cents a gallon while the fate of the beer and wine tax remains unsettled. He warned the split of beer tax proceeds between state and local governments could affect budget balancing as the state seeks more revenue. The measure would yield about $1 million in additional revenue for the state.
The Frederick Board of Election Supervisors announces extended hours from 8 30 a m to 9 p m through next Monday to aid resident voter registration for the Maryland Primary in May. Saturday hours are 9 a m to 4 p m. Absentee ballots available at Winchester Hall basement or any military installation until 10 days before the election. A proposed ballot showing all offices and candidate names is posted for reading from outside even when closed. Five day posting period allows challenges. after that no court shall intervene in ballot form or arrangement if no corrections are requested.
New York prices continued higher in Active trading as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose to 966.44 by 10 30 a m gaining 3 84 points. Traders measured the early gains across several sectors with steady volume and broad participation in advancing stocks.
